Sip some Lemonade and Play Hide and Go Seek

Posted on August 2, 2011

Remember when you were very young and your parents told you "Play outside until dinner is ready!"?

When was the last time you "played outside"? I am not talking about running in Memorial Park or even walking your dogs around the block. I mean really play! We are all so serious. We turn on the news in the morning while we are dressing, only to hear about the games being played by our politicians or that someone in our community suffered a tragedy. We then rush to work in our air conditioned cars and once again turn on the radio to hear the same news we just turned off in our homes. Our smart phones all have Facebook, Twitter and our emails coming through to us in seconds. If we are not on a computer, we are on our phones.

Next time you are out to dinner, look around and see how many people are face down looking at their phones, with their fingers and thumbs pound away messages to people that we just left at the office or just hung up with on the phone. How was your partner's day today? Did your children have fun today? Did they do something that was not electronically transmitted?

Remember the aftermath of Hurricane Ike? No, I am not talking about the damage. Remember for a few days when we had no electricity? When the cell towers were overwhelmed? When our televisions did not work? We sat outside, we visited with our neighbors, we grilled everything in our fridge before it went bad and we shared! Kids were running in the yard, we heard the sound of crickets and we listened to the stillness.

Once a month, stop! Turn off your phones, computers and all other electronic devices.

Go and sip some lemonade...and play Hide and Go Seek. You never know what you will find!

Honey It's Hot Outside!

Houston truly has it all.  I realize that we have had an early and extended heat wave, however, we go from air condtioned cars to air conditioned offices or homes.  Houstonians, whether, native or transfered, have learned to deal!
We leave our ceiling fans running 24/7, drink lots of water and eat lightly.  So you do not do any of this?  START NOW!  Ceiling fans are inexpensive.  Go to Lowe's and buy one for your bedroom and one for your great room.  Drink lots of water and I do mean alot!  Drink one ounce for every pound you weigh and then add 8 ounces to that!  I know that sounds so boring, but liven it up with limes or lemons.  You can even add a package of EMERGEN C to a bottle.  Finally, eat lightly.  I know that sounds difficult when you are overly hungry.  But load up on watermelon, cold soups or salads early in the day.  If you must have that hamburger or steak for dinner, at least you have eaten lightly for the largest part of your day.
What about your pets?  I have three Maltese.  They hate the heat!  I place ice cubes in their water bowl every morning and again when I come home at night.  Occasionally, I go to MAM's on 20th and Rutland to buy Doggie SnoBalls for them.  Have you stopped by Polka Dots on Ella?  Great place for grooming, boarding or daycare.  NO CAGES!!!!  Love, love, love this place!  Also, Natural Paws on 19th has some great items for itching and for yeast infections.
What ideas to you have for cooling off?  Send them to us or post it!  After all, we have at least 12 more weeks before a cool front comes in!  And you all know that a cool front means 88 degrees!
